Marley Spoon: Soy-Miso Beef Burgers With Japanese-Seasoned Sweet Potato Fries

I was on vacation earlier this summer trying oh-so-hard to not check email and do work-ish things.

For the most part I succeeded, but every now and then I’d sneak a peek. During one of the covert email checking missions, I caught a glimpse of an email from a company called Marley Spoon. They were reaching out to see if I’d like to give their DIY meal kit delivery service a try, on them.

Sounds interesting, I thought. And then I went back to vacation.

But, then I got home.

Marley Spoon, eh? I’d never heard of the company. It’s competitors, yes. But not Marley Spoon.

The first thing that crossed my mind, being a foodie and all is this: am I…cheating?

As in, cheating on home cooked meals, I guess.

It really didn’t make any sense, that line of thinking, since the whole point of Marley Spoon is that they send a box, with fresh ingredients to make two recipes, right to your doorstep.

So, like, you have to still cook.

Except the guesswork of what to cook is gone, and everything takes less than 30 minutes to make. You just simply follow the recipe card.

Like this one, which is one of two recipes Marley Spoon sent me ingredients for:

And also for Soy-Miso Beef Burgers with Japanese-Seasoned Sweet Potato Fries, which is what I decided to try my hand at first.

Just like any other “regular” home cook, I thought it’d be wise to follow the step-by-step instructions they sent on the large recipe card, even though I probably could’ve minced my way through it on my own and made a perfectly fine dish.

What following the card did, is it forced me to try something new—beyond just the seasoning mix. I tried BRAISED CUCUMBERS. As in, the epiphany that Julie had in Julie & Julia about how amazingly wonderful braised cucumbers are. Who knew, right?

Without following the card, I probably would have left them raw on the side. Which, of course, is fine. (But maybe a little b-o-r-i-n-g.)

So, enjoy the photos below of my Soy-Miso Beef Burgers with Japanese-Seasoned Sweet Potato Fries, and if you’re interested in giving Marley Spoon a try, check out the weekly menus for upcoming boxes!

I peeled and sliced the sweet potatoes into sticks and coated them with oil, salt and freshly ground pepper.

Ground beef, green onions, miso paste, salt, and Panko bread crumbs were gently mixed together.

Once the patties were browned on each side, sliced cucumbers were added to the pan with mirin and a mixture of sugared soy sauce and allowed to braise for a couple minutes.

The sweet potato fries came out crispy, and they were tossed with furikake while still warm.

The final product – delicious!
